The Role
- The Payroll and Benefits Manager is a critical operational role responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll and benefits processing across all markets.
- You will manage complex, multi-country payroll landscapes, drive process improvements, and serve as a key trust function in our fast-growing, multi-country fintech environment.
- This role reports to the Head, People Enablement and Governance.
What Your Day-to-Day Activities Will Be Like
Payroll Operations:
- Manage end-to-end payroll processing across all active Flutterwave markets, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely disbursement every cycle
- Maintain payroll records, adjustments, and change logs with full audit trail discipline
- Coordinate with HR and Finance teams to ensure all payroll inputs, including new hires, exits, salary changes, bonuses, and deductions, are captured and processed correctly
- Reconcile payroll outputs with Finance ledgers each cycle and resolve discrepancies promptly
- Own the payroll calendar and proactively flag risks to timely processing
Statutory Compliance:
- Ensure full compliance with payroll-related statutory obligations in every market, including PAYE, pension, NHF, NHIS, and equivalent obligations in non-Nigerian markets
- Prepare and file all statutory payroll remittances accurately and on time
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and employment law across markets and update payroll processes accordingly
- Act as the primary point of contact for payroll-related regulatory queries and audits
Benefits Administration:
- Administer employee benefits deductions and contributions through payroll, including group life insurance, health insurance, and pension
- Ensure accurate reflection of benefit enrolments, changes, and terminations in payroll cycles
- Support benefits renewals with payroll data and cost analysis
Systems and Process Improvement:
- Own and optimise payroll system configuration, ensuring it accurately reflects business rules, local statutory requirements, and pay structures
- Streamline and improve payroll processes to reduce error risk and processing time
- Build and maintain a reliable payroll reporting suite for People, Finance, and leadership
Vendor and Partner Management:
- Manage relationships with payroll service providers, statutory agencies, pension fund administrators, and benefits brokers
- Ensure SLAs and compliance obligations are met across all third-party payroll relationships
Governance and Audit:
- Maintain clean, well-structured payroll records that are audit-ready at all times
- Lead payroll-related internal and external audit exercises, producing accurate documentation and resolving queries efficiently
- Identify and escalate payroll risks, flagging issues to the Head, People Enablement and Governance proactively
- Ensure personal information of customers, employees, and partners is processed and protected in line with data privacy laws and global best practices
Required competencies to be a Waver
- Minimum of 7 years' experience in payroll management, with direct responsibility for multi-country payroll
- Deep knowledge of Nigerian payroll legislation, including PAYE, pension (PenCom), NHF, and NSITF; exposure to other African markets is a strong advantage
- Proven experience managing payroll in a regulated or financial services environment
- Hands-on experience with payroll software and HRIS platforms; ability to configure and optimise payroll systems
- Strong reconciliation and analytical skills, with high attention to numerical accuracy
- Track record of building payroll processes, not just running them
- Relevant professional qualifications in HR, Finance, or Payroll (e.g. CIPM, ICAN, CIPP) are an advantage
- Excellent attention to detail, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
