SUMMARY OF POSITION:



The Resident Coordinator (Female Dormitory) shall work to create residential environments that enhance students’ academic progress and success by creating opportunities for students to explore and clarify their interests, values and attitudes. The position is expected to know and abide by AUN policies including but not limited to the Fundamental Standard, the Honor Code, the Controlled Substances and Alcohol Policy, the Smoking Policy, the Policy on Sexual Harassment and Consensual, Sexual or Romantic Relationships, as well as the Residence Agreement. The position shall promote the intellectual life of the residences and build an inclusive and reflective environment in which different backgrounds in belief are explored.



DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Assumes a primary leadership role, serving as role models for responsible behavior and personal integrity, exercise good judgment.

  • Provides personal and academic counseling and referral.

  • Should be available to student, and to encourage student responsibility and accountability.

  • Knows and educates residents about the university emergency response protocols and procedures including establishing emergency response teams as set out in the protocols for residences.

  • Participates in residence hall activities.

  • Assumes duty according to the formal and/or informal hall schedule and remain on call as required.

  • Assists in the opening and closing of the hall, preparation of rosters, and other duties assigned.

  • Compile a list of damaged inventories and cooperate with the campus dining staff.

  • Be available and report all safety hazards and maintenance concerns.

  • Be ready at times of emergency.

  • Directs residents to the academic resources and support services on campus (e.g. tutors, labs, library resources, academic advising).

  • Plans and promotes educational opportunities and programs in the residence.

  • Invites faculty into the residences to create an opportunity where faculty can have a comfortable, informal interaction with the students.

  • Promotes the intellectual life of the residence through formal and informal discussions about campus, national and international issues (including culture, values, belief, social, political and ethical issues).

  • Share their intellectual and academic interests with residents and encourage residents to discuss academic interests, experiences, goals and future plans.

  • Assumes a leadership role in crises e.g. fire and other emergencies.

  • Helps establish community norms and ground rules to ensure open and honest communication and responsible student conduct.

  • Coordinates a personal relationship with each student living on their floor. Be available and give genuine assistance to students. Maintain daily contact and be aware of existing and developing problems.

  • Serves as the leader in developing and facilitating an environment where students can grow and learn socially as well as academically.

  • Serves as the liaison between students and the Director of Student Affairs.

  • Prepares and maintains accurate records regarding room change, maintenance, damages and policy violations.

  • Works to promote a sense of tolerance and consideration in the attitudes and behavior of students living in the residence.

  • Be sensitive to the needs of all groups in the residence, and help residents remain aware of each other’s concerns.

  • Mediates conflict and help residents to take responsibility for their community.

  • Maintains confidentiality of both private conversations and staff discussions.

  • Participates fully in the opening and closing of residences.

  • Posts fliers about campus and house events.

  • Assumes responsibility for premises security, including the use of the master key, and evening lockup.

  • Prepares weekly summaries of dorm reports to be submitted to the Director of Residence Life.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned.



Requirements for the position:




  • Bachelor's Degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences or any other related field.

  • At least one (1) year experience working with students in a university setting

  • Excellent in English and Hausa languages.

  • Energetic people, strong personality, able to inspire the respect of strong-willed students.

  • Possession of excellent communication, interpersonal and customer care skills.
