Job Description
Duration: 12 months (renewable based on performance and project funding)
Purpose of the Position
The Protection Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that protection principles (including gender sensitivity, inclusion, and accountability to affected populations) are fully integrated into all aspects of the MCF project. The coordinator will lead the development of protection strategies, provide technical support and capacity building to project staff and partners, ensure protection mainstreaming, and liaise with stakeholders to uphold humanitarian protection standards.
Key Responsibilities
Protection and Gender Mainstreaming
- Lead the integration of protection principles across all project components, especially in enterprise development, products and services, and capacity-building activities.
- Ensure that project activities adhere to gender-sensitive and protection-sensitive approaches that safeguard vulnerable groups, especially young women and marginalized populations.
- Ensure inclusion of environmental, conflict, and human rights sensitivity in all protection-related interventions.
Capacity Building and Technical Support
- Provide training and technical support to SHO and partner staff on protection, gender equality, conflict sensitivity, and safeguarding.
- Support the development of tools, guidelines, and SOPs for protection mainstreaming.
- Coordinate awareness-raising campaigns on gender-based violence (GBV), youth rights, and equal access to services.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEAL)
- Contribute to the design of protection-sensitive M&E frameworks and indicators.
- Monitor protection risks and incidents within project sites and propose mitigation strategies.
- Support learning and knowledge-sharing on protection and gender across the project and with partners.
Coordination and Representation
- Participate in relevant Protection Sector Working Groups, GBV sub-cluster meetings, and inter-agency coordination forums at the state level.
- Build strong working relationships with local CSOs, government structures (e.g., Ministry of Women Affairs), and WFP technical teams.
Reporting
- Contribute to regular project reports, including protection-specific inputs in weekly, monthly, and annual reports.
- Support the development of ad-hoc protection briefs, case studies, and success stories that highlight best practices and learning.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Gender Studies, Psychology, Law, International Relations, or related field. Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in protection programming, gender mainstreaming, or GBV prevention in humanitarian or development settings.
- Proven experience in designing and implementing gender-sensitive programming, including tools, assessments, and capacity building.
- Strong understanding of accountability to affected populations (AAP), protection mainstreaming, and safeguarding principles.
- Demonstrated experience in coordination with partners, government agencies, and clusters.
- Excellent facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Fluent in English (required); knowledge of Hausa or local languages in Adamawa is a strong asset.
