Job Description
Contract Duration: 6 Months.
Reports to: Project Manager
Job Purpose:
The WASH Officer will be responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) interventions in project locations. The role ensures the delivery of high-quality WASH infrastructure and hygiene promotion activities that meet humanitarian standards and improve community health outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Program Implementation
- Support the design and implementation of WASH activities including water supply systems, sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion campaigns.
- Conduct needs assessments and technical feasibility studies in project communities.
- Supervise construction and rehabilitation of WASH facilities such as boreholes, hand pumps, latrines, and water points.
- Ensure activities comply with Sphere Standards and national WASH guidelines.
- Develop work plans and activity schedules for WASH interventions.
Community Engagement
- Facilitate community mobilization and participation in WASH activities.
- Support the establishment and training of Water User Committees and sanitation committees.
- Promote hygiene behaviour change through community education sessions and campaigns.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Monitor WASH program implementation and ensure timely reporting.
- Collect and analyze program data in collaboration with the MEAL team.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and donor reports.
Coordination
- Participate in coordination meetings with local authorities, WASH sector partners, and community stakeholders.
- Support integration of WASH activities with health, nutrition, and education programs.
Logistics and Resource Management
- Support procurement of WASH materials and equipment.
- Monitor proper use and maintenance of WASH infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Civil Engineering, Water Resources Management, Public Health, or related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in WASH programming in humanitarian or development contexts.
- Experience supervising WASH infrastructure construction projects.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong technical knowledge of water systems, sanitation technologies, and hygiene promotion.
- Experience with community-led total sanitation (CLTS) approaches.
- Strong reporting and documentation skills.
- Ability to work in remote and challenging environments.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Strong organizational, analytical, and reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of relevant local languages is an advantage.
- Previous experience working in the BAY states (Borno, Adamawa, Yobe).
