The Waste Management Technician is responsible for the efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible processing of all hotel waste. This role ensures that waste generated from guest rooms, kitchens, and public areas is correctly sorted, processed, and stored before collection by LAWMA or private recycling contractors.
Key Responsibilities
Waste Sorting & Segregation: Manually sort and separate materials into designated streams, including general waste, recyclables (paper, plastic, glass, metal), organic/food waste, and hazardous materials (batteries, light bulbs, chemical containers).
Equipment Operation: Safely operate and perform basic maintenance on waste processing machinery, such as industrial compactors, balers, shredders, and glass crushers.
Sanitization & Maintenance: Clean and disinfect waste holding rooms, bins, and processing areas daily to prevent odors and pest infestations.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all waste handling follows local environmental laws, health and safety regulations, and hotel brand sustainability standards.
Documentation: Maintain accurate daily logs of waste types and volumes collected, as well as tracking outgoing shipments to disposal or recycling facilities.
Coordination: Liaise with waste collection contractors and internal departments (like Kitchen Stewarding) to ensure timely pickups and efficient flow of waste through the building.
Qualifications & Skills
Education: Secondary School Certificate or equivalent; vocational training in waste management is a plus.
Experience: Prior experience in waste management, custodial work, or back-of-house hotel operations preferred.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy loads (up to 25 kg), stand for long shifts, and work in varied environments.
Knowledge: Familiarity with Recycling Protocols and the safe handling of Hazardous Waste.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Strict adherence to wearing required safety gear (gloves, masks, safety shoes) at all times.
