Job Description
The Transport Manager is responsible for the managing and monitoring of all transporters and transport related activities such as Safety, Deployment of trucks, Truck utilization and performance management (Back office).
He will focus on developing innovative solutions to some of the standard transport operations management. - transport allocation planning, network optimization and transport optimization etc. This position will help the Operations achieve its goals & objectives of delivering the benefits of the trucking strategy both in the short and long Terms.
In summary, the position is responsible for the implementation and management of the transport systems to optimize the performance of the transport operation, in a manner that is line with the standards of Lafarge Africa Plc.
What you'll be doing
- Overall responsibility for the dispatch operations of the Operations.
- Management: Responsible for Managing the transporters and fleet under the trucking strategy scheme and similar future schemes
- Ensure coordination of all transport planning, routing and Implement load scheduling to achieve a good truck cycle time for the trucking strategy fleet
- Responsible for accurate reporting and interpretation of data to identify trends in monitoring of the activities of the dedicated Lafarge trucks and other contracted trucks
- Works with the Logistics Controller in monitoring and analyzing the performance of the contracted trucks to achieve the projected savings of the full year transport cost
- Carrier Performance: Ensures dedicated transporters provide on time an enough Service Resources to achieve the minimum trips/truck and cost savings in accordance with the provisions of the agreement, the Service Specification and the Company’s requirements
- Responsible for monitoring the deliveries of the Products on the date and within the delivery window or within the Journey management plan for the route
- Work with the Representative of the transporter to convey a Joint Management Meeting on a date they agree in the calendar month following the end of each calendar month at which time Services will be reviewed and key matters shall be discussed
- Ensures dedicated transporters always provide accurate details of truck whereabouts and activities per trip for payment purposes and validation
- Tracking of Service Resources - 100%: Ensures The transporter's Services resources are equipped with tracking devices to enable the Company visibility and tracking of its Products under this Agreement. And shall conduct quarterly assessment of these KPI and make recommendations to Lafarge on the KPI which.
- Visibility of Service Resources – Minimum level of 95%: Ensure all Service Resources are visible by the Company’s GPS system during the performance of the Services. The error margin being +/- 5% and 100% being the optimum performance of this KPI, which THE TRANSPORTER shall seek to achieve. Make recommendations to Lafarge Management for any violation of this KPI
- Leads the Monitoring of Service Resources speed with the Road Safety to ensure they do not exceed the agreed speed threshold of the Company during performance of the Services
TRANSPORT OPERATIONS:
- Oversees the transportation operations and monitor various activities of the Unit as well as the safe transportation of cement from the company to the scheduled delivery location
- Responsible for directing activities related to truck utilization, leading the inbound and Outbound logistics coordination for the Operations, dispatching, routing, or tracking transportation vehicles, transporters relationship management
- Responsible for Managing approximately 85 Delivered transporters and their fleet (over 500 trucks)
- Leads investigation and resolution of issues surrounding delays, customer and transporter complaints across the Regions
- Ensure coordination of all transport planning, routing and Implement load scheduling to achieve a good truck cycle time for the from the other transporters
- Ensure transport unit operational expenses are consistent with approved budgets.
- Works with the Health & Safety Manager in the implementation of 5 pillars of logistics - Contractor management; vehicle management; driver management; Journey management and Load Management to develop our transporters to 5 star and promoting safety management system through transporters’ safety audits
- Responsible for Transport plan and capacity check on a weekly horizon as an output from Sales and Operations Planning
- Implement Business rules for daily transport optimization
- Leads Management of Carrier Operational Performance
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Manages the Logistics Back Office team to ensure
- End to End Transport Management: Logistics related Issues from loading to Delivery in order to achieve on time delivery as well as good vehicle turnaround time
- Real time Monitoring of Trucks and visibility
- Escalate all delays associated with the trucks under the trucking strategy both at customer site and in-plant
- Performance Management - Data Capturing and reporting, data analysis (daily, weekly and monthly delay per truck /trip /customer) and value identification
- Manages and executes supply chain and transport related projects
- Work independently the execution of multiple business plans and projects while ensuring deadlines are met and data output is accurate and appropriate for the business. Must also be able to deal with ambiguity and make independent decisions about what data and approach is best for the task at hand.
- Implement Supply Chain MOVE Model in alignment with the CO-SC
- Driving supply chain optimization duties and initiatives across the organizational enterprise;
MANAGEMENT:
- Measure the general performance on the trucking strategy and transport operations, set KPI’s against goals, assess the needed optimization, propose/challenge related action plans.
- Ensure proper communication of actions, related decisions to all people concerned
- Responsibilities include:

Mobility
- Position is based near the main production site of the region with occasional travel to the Head office to support country management
Requirements
- At least 5 years’ experience in Supply Chain or logistics, preferably at management level
- Masters in Supply chain, Engineering or BA
- Good communication and influencing skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Experience of managing teams
- Deep knowledge of the MEA Business Model
- Deep understanding of both the Outbound and Inbound logistics process
- Deep knowledge of procedures and guidelines for the Logistics contingency plan
