Job Description




  • St. Dominic Catholic Hospital is seeking a compassionate, highly skilled, and dedicated Registered Midwife to join its Maternity Unit.

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based care to women throughout pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postnatal period, while ensuring the health and well-being of both mother and newborn.

  • The ideal candidate must demonstrate sound clinical judgment, excellent interpersonal skills, and a commitment to delivering safe, respectful, and patient-centred maternity care in accordance with professional standards and hospital policies.



Key Responsibilities




  • Provide comprehensive antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and newborn care.

  • Assess, monitor, and manage pregnant women during labour and delivery.

  • Monitor fetal and maternal well-being and promptly report abnormalities to the attending physician.

  • Conduct normal deliveries within the scope of professional practice and assist with obstetric emergencies.

  • Administer prescribed medications, intravenous fluids, and treatments accurately.

  • Provide family planning counselling and reproductive health education.

  • Educate expectant and new mothers on pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care, nutrition, and postnatal recovery.

  • Monitor mothers and newborns for complications and ensure timely intervention or referral when necessary.

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely nursing and midwifery documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control protocols.

  • Assist doctors during obstetric procedures, Caesarean sections, and other maternity-related interventions.

  • Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and clinical audits.

  • Support and mentor junior nurses, student midwives, and nurse assistants where applicable.

  • Promote compassionate, respectful, and confidential care at all times.

  • Ensure the maternity unit is clean, organized, and adequately equipped.



Requirements

Education & Professional Requirements:




  • Registered Midwife (RM) qualification.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) qualification is an added advantage.

  • Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.) is an added advantage.

  • Valid Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) practicing license.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is desirable. Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) or Emergency Obstetric Care training is an added advantage.



Experience:




  • Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in a maternity or obstetric unit.

  • Experience in antenatal clinic, labour ward, postnatal ward, and newborn care is highly desirable.



Required Skills & Competencies:




  • Excellent knowledge of maternal and newborn healthcare.

  • Strong labour and delivery management skills.

  • Competence in fetal monitoring and emergency obstetric care.

  • Excellent clinical assessment and critical thinking abilities.

  • Compassionate, patient-centred, and respectful approach to care.

  • Good communication, counselling, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong documentation and record-keeping skills.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond promptly to emergencies.

  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.

  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and accountability.



Other Requirements:




  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, public holidays, and emergency call duties.

  • Strong commitment to quality maternal and newborn care.

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and uphold ethical standards.

  • Excellent customer service skills and a positive attitude towards patients and colleagues.
