Job Responsibilities

• The Machinist, either as a Miller / Tunner is to operate various machine tools to precisely cut, grind, and shape metal, plastic, or other materials, creating or modifying parts with exact dimensions by reading and interpreting blueprints, setting up machines, and monitoring production to ensure quality standards are met;they also perform routine maintenance on the equipment.

Key responsibilities

Operating machinery:

• Setting up and running a variety of machine tools like lathes, mills, grinders, drills, etc.

Blueprint interpretation:

• Reading and understanding engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining operations and sequences.

Precision measurements:

• Taking precise measurements using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools to ensure parts meet tolerances.

Material selection:

• Understanding the properties of different metals and materials to choose the appropriate ones for the job.

Quality control:

• Inspecting finished parts to verify they meet quality standards and identifying defects.

Machine maintenance:

• Performing routine maintenance tasks like lubrication, cleaning, and minor repairs to ensure optimal machine functionality.

CNC programming (in some cases):

• Writing and editing CNC programs to automate machining processes on computer numerical control machines.

Problem-solving:

• Troubleshooting machine issues and adjusting settings to resolve production problems.

Skills required for a machinist:

• Technical skills:Understanding of machining principles, cutting tools, and machine operations


• Mechanical aptitude:Ability to read blueprints, interpret technical drawings, and visualize complex shapes


• Mathematical skills:Proficiency in basic math calculations to determine dimensions and tolerances


• Hand-eye coordination:Precision in manipulating tools and setting up machines


• Attention to detail:Ability to consistently produce high-quality parts with accuracy


• Physical stamina:Standing for extended periods and lifting heavy materials (depending on the role).
