Department: Janitorial Unit
Reports To: Janitor Supervisor
Job Summary:
The Hospital Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in all areas of the hospital, including patient rooms, operating theaters, offices, hallways, and public spaces. This role would ensure high standards of cleanliness in compliance with hospital policies and health regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clean and disinfect patient rooms, surgical areas, restrooms, waiting areas, offices, and other hospital spaces.
- Safely handle and dispose of wastes.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors using appropriate cleaning equipment.
- Restock soap dispensers, hand sanitizers, paper towels, and other supplies.
- Follow strict protocols for cleaning high-risk areas.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Report maintenance issues (e.g., leaks, broken fixtures) promptly to supervisors.
- Ensure cleaning supplies are used properly and stored securely.
- Follow infection prevention and control policies to prevent cross-contamination.
- Respond to urgent cleaning requests in emergency situations or spills.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect patient privacy at all times.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum of SSCE/High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Prior janitorial experience, especially in a hospital or healthcare setting, is preferred.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
- Familiarity with safety and sanitation standards (e.g., WHO, CDC, or local health agency guidelines).
- Physical stamina and ability to lift, push, and pull cleaning equipment.
- Attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures precisely.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Willingness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Working Conditions:
- Frequent exposure to bodily fluids, infectious waste, and cleaning chemicals.
- Requires wearing protective gear such as gloves, gowns, and masks.
- Work is performed indoors with walking, standing, and lifting throughout shifts.
