- The Business Development Officer will drive profitability by securing businesses including but not limited to backhaul cargo for return trips, optimizing fleet utilization, and minimizing empty runs.
- This role combines strategic relationship-building, market intelligence, and aggressive deal-making to expand the company’s cargo network in the Northern Region. Success will be measured by revenue growth, client retention, and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
Cargo Sourcing & Revenue Generation:
- Proactively identify and secure backloads from manufacturers, agro-exporters, FMCG distributors, and industrial hubs.
- Target high-value sectors (e.g., agriculture, mining, manufacturing) to maximize load profitability.
Business Development:
- Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of clients and brokers through cold outreach, networking, and partnerships.
- Leverage existing industry contacts to unlock new opportunities in the Northern Region.
Negotiation & Deal Closure:
- Negotiate competitive freight rates, payment terms, and contracts with clients and third-party logistics providers.
- Ensure terms align with company profitability goals while maintaining client satisfaction.
Market Intelligence:
- Monitor regional trade flows, competitor pricing, and emerging cargo trends to inform sourcing strategies.
- Provide insights on seasonal demand shifts (e.g., harvest periods, export cycles).
Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Work closely with operations teams to align cargo availability with trucking schedules and routes.
- Resolve loading/delivery disputes promptly to uphold service standards.
Performance Tracking:
- Maintain real-time records of secured loads, revenue, and client feedback.
- Submit weekly/monthly reports on KPIs and market opportunities.
Requirements
- 3+ years in cargo sourcing, freight brokerage, or logistics sales, with a proven track record in securing backloads.
- Deep regional networkacross Northern Nigeria’s agro-industrial, mining, and trading sectors.
- Strong negotiatorwith ability to close deals under tight margins.
- Tech-savvy: Proficient in Excel (for data analysis), CRM tools, and email communication.
- Analytical mindset: Ability to assess cargo viability (weight, route, pricing) swiftly.
Preferred:
- Existing relationships with shippers, brokers, or export associations.
- Experience in perishable cargo (e.g., agriculture, livestock) or hazardous materials logistics.
- Fluency in Hausa or other regional languages.
- Target oriented.
