Job Summary
- We are seeking a qualified and safety-conscious Designated Person Ashore (DPA) Officer to serve as the critical link between the company’s shore-based management and its vessel operations.
- The DPA will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation and maintenance of the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) in compliance with the ISM Code, while promoting a strong safety and compliance culture across the fleet.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary contact between ship and shore for all safety, pollution prevention, and regulatory compliance matters.
- Monitor and ensure the implementation of the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) onboard vessels.
- Conduct internal safety audits, inspections, and reviews in line with ISM Code and flag/state requirements.
- Ensure timely reporting and investigation of incidents, near misses, and non-conformities; follow up on corrective actions.
- Maintain up-to-date records and documentation required under the ISM Code and other applicable maritime regulations.
- Liaise with flag state, classification societies, and regulatory bodies such as NIMASA.
- Provide support and guidance to vessel crews on safety, environmental protection, and operational best practices.
- Organize and oversee safety drills, emergency preparedness activities, and crew training.
- Participate in regular vessel visits to assess SMS effectiveness and safety culture.
- Assist in the development and continuous improvement of safety procedures and manuals.
Requirements
Education & Experience:
- B.Sc. / HND in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, or a related field.
- 2–3 years’ experience in a similar DPA or marine safety role.
- Seafaring background or experience working closely with marine operations is a strong advantage.
Certifications:
- DPA Certification in accordance with ISM Code requirements.
- STCW Certification is an added advantage.
- HSE Level Certifications or NEBOSH is a plus.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of ISM Code, SOLAS, MARPOL, and other maritime safety regulations.
- Excellent communication, report writing, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound safety-related decisions.
- Proficient in MS Office and safety management software systems.
