Job Description
Purpose of the Role
- The Fiber Technician will be responsible for field installation, splicing, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fiber optic cables and related infrastructure. The role will ensure efficient service delivery and quick resolution of technical issues.
Scope of Work
The Fiber Technician will:
- Install and maintain fiber optic networks and equipment.
- Perform fiber optic splicing, termination, and testing.
- Troubleshoot and repair faults in the fiber network.
- Conduct site surveys and prepare installation reports.
- Support customer installations and ensure proper connectivity.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and safety standards during fieldwork.
- Document all activities and update records in line with company procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Maintenance
- Install fiber optic cables, enclosures, and termination boxes.
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on the network.
Splicing & Testing
- Perform fiber splicing using fusion splicers.
- Test fiber links with OTDR, power meters, and other tools.
Troubleshooting & Repairs
- Diagnose and resolve fiber cuts, attenuation, and connectivity issues.
- Provide timely support for escalated customer complaints.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain detailed logs of work done, including test results and repairs.
- Submit regular reports on network status, faults, and resolutions.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to safety protocols and company standards.
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of tools and protective equipment.
Deliverables
- Timely and successful installation of customer connections.
- Reduced downtime and quick fault resolution.
- Accurate splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber links.
- Up-to-date maintenance and service records.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Number of installations completed within SLA.
- Average resolution time for faults.
- Network uptime percentage.
- Accuracy of test results and reporting.
- Compliance with safety standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- OND/HND/Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics, Telecommunications, or related field.
- 2–4 years’ experience as a fiber technician or in telecoms field operations.
- Hands-on experience with fiber splicing, OTDR testing, and troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic cabling, connectors, and networking principles.
- Ability to work at heights and in outdoor environments.
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
