Job Description

• A Veterinary Surgeon's job involves diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries in animals through medical and surgical means, including performing surgeries, managing anesthesia, prescribing medications, and conducting diagnostic tests like X-rays and bloodwork.


• Key responsibilities include patient assessment, post-operative care, advising owners on animal health, maintaining detailed patient records, staying updated on veterinary advancements, and providing emergency care.

Core Responsibilities

• Diagnosis and Treatment: Identify and treat a wide range of animal illnesses and injuries.


• Surgery: Perform various surgical procedures, including orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries.


• Anesthesia: Manage anesthesia for surgical and medical procedures.


• Diagnostics: Conduct diagnostic tests such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and blood samples.


• Medication: Prescribe appropriate medications for various conditions.


• Pre and Post-Operative Care: Oversee patient assessments before surgery and manage post-operative care for optimal recovery.


• Preventative Care: Administer vaccinations and other preventative treatments, like deworming.


• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate patient records of diagnoses, treatments, and illnesses.


• Client Communication: Provide advice and support to animal owners regarding their animal's welfare and treatment.

Common Duties:

• Performing Surgeries: Conduct surgical operations to treat sick or injured animals.


• Managing Emergencies: Be available for on-call duties to handle emergency situations.


• Euthanasia: Perform euthanasia on old or terminally ill animals when necessary.


• Staying Current: Attend conferences and workshops to keep up-to-date with new techniques and trends in veterinary medicine.


• Working with Other Professionals: Collaborate with other veterinarians and technicians to develop treatment plans for complex cases.

Requirements

• Candidates should possess a Bachelor Degree / HND with 4 - 5 years of work experience.

Work Settings:

• Veterinary Surgeons work in a variety of environments, including Private veterinary clinics and hospitals, Animal farms, Zoos, and Client homes.

Salary

N150,000 - N160,000 / month
