The Research & Development Supervisor is responsible for executing bench work activities related to new product development, product reformulation, pilot plant operations, and factory scale-up trials, while also overseeing the sensory evaluation of raw materials and finished products. In addition, the incumbent will ensure the timely completion of bench work, shelf-life studies, and the development of product prototypes in line with agreed timelines.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Execute bench work activities for innovation and development of formulation prototypes in support of new product development projects.
Perform optimization and improvement of existing PNG formulations to enhance both product quality and margin delivery.
Support claim substantiation and nutritional labeling activities for new products, including the development of product instructional information.
Assist in the development, validation, release, maintenance, and review of technical specifications for raw materials and finished products.
Conduct physical and sensory evaluations of potential raw materials prior to approval for use.
Contribute to the technical management, pre-qualification, and integration of new suppliers, raw materials, and ingredients.
Coordinate and execute internal sensory sessions, including sample preparation, questionnaire design, panelist selection, sample administration, statistical analysis, and reporting.
Provide support during factory acceptance trials to ensure smooth scale-up of production from laboratory and pilot scale to full factory level.
Support the operation and maintenance of the R&D extrusion pilot plant for new product and process development.
Assist in the development, modification, and implementation of test methods for evaluating products and raw materials.
Establish trial methodologies to monitor shelf life and product/pack stability for both new and reformulated products.
Support the maintenance and continuous certification of the PNG Food Safety Management System in line with ISO 22000 standards.
Oversee R&D laboratory operations, raw material handling, and sample management.
Supervise the R&D pilot plant operative and interns to ensure adherence to standards and delivery of project objectives.
Experience
A degree in Food Science and Technology, Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and other related discipline.
Minimum of 3 years FMCG experience in Research and Development
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Practical knowledge of new product development, formulation, and reformulation.
Proficiency in laboratory food chemical/proximate analysis and testing methods.
Strong competence in sensory evaluation and shelf-life studies.
Good understanding of technical standards, product specifications, and compliance requirements.
Familiarity with food processing techniques and food ingredient functionalities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with solid computer literacy across standard applications.
Strong data analysis and report-writing skills.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly and effectively.
