Job Purpose




  • The nutrition assistant directly supports community outreach and facility-level implementation to ensure access to lifesaving nutrition interventions in hard-to-reach areas.



Responsibilities and Tasks

Key Performance Indicator:





  • Timely implementation and reporting of CMAM/IYCF activities, quality and completeness of data collection and reporting tools, level of community participation and satisfaction and adherence to PSEA and safeguarding principles.





Program Implementation and Monitoring:




  • Support the daily implementation of CMAM and/or IYCF activities at health facilities and community outreach sites.

  • Conduct community-based screening of children under five and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) for malnutrition using MUAC and other approved tools.

  • Assist in the identification and registration of eligible beneficiaries in the OTP or IYCF programs following national protocols.

  • Ensure regular follow-up of beneficiaries, including absentees and defaulters, and conduct household visits where necessary.

  • Support nutrition officers in providing nutrition education and counselling sessions to caregivers and community groups.

  • Disseminate key messages on infant and young child feeding, hygiene promotion, and maternal nutrition at the community level.

  • Assist in organizing and facilitating community sensitization, focus group discussions, and capacity-building sessions for volunteers and Lead Mothers.

  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of nutrition materials and supplies during field activities.



M&E Support—Data Collection, Reporting, and Accountability:




  • Collect and record beneficiary data accurately using standardized tools and templates.

  • Submit timely and accurate weekly and monthly activity reports to the Nutrition Officer.

  • Participate in data verification, validation, and compilation of activity statistics at the site level.

  • Support in maintaining proper documentation and archiving of records at the site and field office.

  • Contribute to the strengthening of the community feedback and complaints mechanism in project locations.



Community Engagement and Coordination:




  • Collaborate closely with community leaders, health workers, and volunteers to ensure community ownership of nutrition interventions.

  • Assist in the identification, training, and supervision of Community Nutrition Mobilizers (CNMs), Lead Mothers, and other community focal persons.

  • Represent CATAI positively and professionally during field activities and community meetings.

  • Communicate promptly to the Nutrition Officer any challenges, security concerns, or feedback received from beneficiaries or community stakeholders.



Logistics and Administration:




  • Support the Nutrition Officer in organizing logistics for field activities, including materials, transport, and site preparation.

  • Ensure all program materials and equipment are safely handled and properly stored after use.

  • Report any damaged, missing, or expired items to the supervisor promptly.



Qualifications and Required Skills

Education:





  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Nursing, Community Health, Public Health, or a related discipline.





Experience:




  • Minimum of 1 year experience in implementing CMAM and/or IYCF programs, preferably in humanitarian or emergency settings.

  • Experience working in community-based nutrition or health programs is an asset.



Skills and Competencies:




  • Good knowledge of nutrition principles and community mobilization techniques.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, Hausa, and/or Kanuri.

  • Proficiency in basic data collection and reporting using paper or digital tools.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, and cultural sensitivity.

  • Ability to work under pressure and in remote field locations.
