Job Description
Role Summary:
- The Mini-Grids Technical Officer/Associate role provides technical support across the entire lifecycle of mini-grid projects from development and feasibility validation through construction, commissioning and operations. The role involves extensive desktop reviews, documentation, and field coordination while ensuring engineering accuracy, quality assurance, safety and reliable system performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Development Phase
- Support desktop assessments, load analysis and technical due diligence for potential sites.
- Support feasibility documentation, including demand estimation, GIS reviews, site validation and resource analysis.
- Support review of engineering reports, preliminary designs, geotechnical info and environmental/HSE documentation.
- Prepare technical input required for project approvals, funding partners and regulatory submissions.
- Support the preparation of technical sections of proposals and development reports.
Engineering Design & Technical Documentation
- Assist in detailed design reviews (SLDs, layouts, equipment protection, LV distribution).
- Prepare and validate material specifications and equipment datasheets.
- Ensure project documentation aligns with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in design & technical meetings with necessary stakeholders
Construction & Commissioning
- Support site mobilization, civil works inspection and installation.
- Ensure teams adhere to engineering standards, quality standards and safety protocols.
- Support FAT/SAT (Factory & Site Acceptance Tests), commissioning, energization checks and QAQC.
- Support handover to operations.
- Ensure all site activities comply with safety procedures.
- Support enforcement of contractor HSE compliance.
Operations & Maintenance
- Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance and diagnostics of renewable systems.
- Track and update performance logs, outages, generation/consumption trends and maintenance reports.
- Support meter installation, testing, activation, and customer connection approvals.
- Verify load readiness and ensure safe installation standards by customers.
- Assist with customer technical training (safe usage, load management, energy efficiency).
- Work with stakeholders to facilitate surveys, customer onboarding and O&M.
- Communicate scheduled outages, maintenance, and system status to community stakeholders.
Reporting, Data Analytics & System Monitoring
- Gather field and desktop data required for performance assessment.
- Monitor remote monitoring dashboards and flag abnormalities.
- Prepare weekly and monthly reports for the reporting line.
- Maintain organised project files, drawings, and documentation repositories.
Education:
- B.Eng or HND in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Systems, or related field experience.
- 3–4 years across solar, minigrids, power systems, electrical installations & LV networks.
- Experience in office and field design reviews, project development support and/or EPC supervision is an advantage.
- COREN certification is an advantage.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of PV systems, batteries, inverters, LV networks, and metering.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings (SLDs, layout diagrams, schematics).
- Ability to use basic electrical tools and testing equipment.
- Good command of MS Office and familiarity with monitoring platforms.
