JOB PURPOSE
- The Assistant Lecturer role is a research-in-formation and teaching-apprenticeship rank, designed to groom future biochemical scientists grounded in rigorous laboratory science, applied problem-solving, and Africa-relevant innovation in health, food systems, biotechnology and environmental sustainability.
- The purpose of this job is therefore to support undergraduate teaching and laboratory instruction, assist in research activities, pursue doctoral training, and internalise UAST’s standards of academic excellence, safety, innovation and community relevance.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaching & Laboratory Support
- Assist in delivery of lectures, tutorials and practical classes in core Biochemistry courses.
- Prepare laboratory reagents, demonstrations and practical manuals in compliance with safety standards.
- Support continuous assessment, grading and student mentoring.
Research & Capacity Development
- Participate in departmental research groups and laboratory projects.
- Enrol in and actively pursue a PhD programme within the stipulated timeframe.
- Support data collection, analysis and manuscript preparation.
Academic Service
- Assist in departmental administration, accreditation preparation and quality assurance activities.
- Uphold laboratory ethics, biosafety and academic integrity.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Biochemistry or closely related discipline (with strong Biochemistry content).
- Evidence of readiness and commitment to pursue a PhD in Biochemistry.
Academic Qualifications (Mandatory)
- Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Biochemistry or closely related discipline (with strong Biochemistry content).
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
- 2-3 years of relevant teaching/research experience.
- Evidence of readiness and commitment to pursue a PhD in Biochemistry.
