Job Description




  • The role is responsible for driving the Company’s underwriting strategy, overseeing Technical Unit operations, and ensuring profitable risk management.

  • The position collaborates with executive management to achieve the Company’s vision, manage team performance and budgets, meet departmental targets, and provide strategic input in line with industry best practices.



Key Responsibilties




  • Collaborate with EXCO members to drive the achievement of the Company’s vision.

  • Advise Management and the Board on best practices for Technical Unit operations.

  • Oversee overall operations of the Technical Unit to ensure annual targets are achieved cost-effectively.

  • Plan and drive departmental activities to meet stated objectives.

  • Review activity reports and financial statements to track performance and recommend improvement areas.

  • Attend weekly management meetings and carry out other assigned duties.

  • Supervise, coach, and mentor team members to enhance performance.

  • Manage team productivity, appraisals, and job closures.

  • Control operating costs in line with approved budgets.

  • Develop, manage, and drive the team budget.

  • Ensure underwriting profitability.



Role Qualifications




  • First degree in any discipline

  • A relevant Master’s Degree will be an advantage

  • An Insurance Professional Qualification is compulsory.



Work Experience:




  • Minimum of 7 years post qualification experience in the insurance sector with at least 4 years experiences in heading a technical unit.



Required Skills and Competencies:




  • In-depth knowledge of the Nigerian Insurance Industry and regulatory environment

  • Proven expertise in underwriting and reinsurance across all classes of insurance

  • Excellent customer relationship management and business development capabilities

  • Demonstrated negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills

  • Ability to drive product development, innovation, and effective portfolio management

  • Sound understanding of commercial financial products and credit management

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong leadership, coaching, team development, and stakeholder management capabilities

  • Effective organizational, coordination, and administrative skills

  • High level of initiative, accountability, and ownership mindset

  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and decision-making abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and self-management skills

  • •Proven business acumen with experience in budgeting, planning, forecasting, and market penetration strategies

  • Ability to deliver accurate, data-driven business decisions aligned with corporate objectives.
