Job Purpose




  • The Medical Imaging Scientist is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services to patients using ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.

  • This role involves the technical operation of sophisticated equipment and ensuring the highest standards of patient care and radiation protection in accordance with the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) guidelines.



Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Technical Duties:




  • Perform various radiographic examinations, including General X-rays, Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Ultrasound, and CT Scans.

  • Assist the Consultant Radiologist in specialized procedures like HSGand IVU.

  • Ensure accurate patient positioning and use of immobilization techniques to obtain optimal diagnostic views on the first attempt.

  • Process and package medical images (Digital Radiography/CR) for interpretation by the Radiologist.

  • Maintain accurate records of all examinations performed and ensure patients’ bio-data are correctly captured in the Hospital Information System (HIS).



Radiation Safety & Quality Assurance:




  • Strictly adhere to the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle to protect patients, staff, and the public.

  • Apply lead shields and gonadal protection where necessary.

  • Perform daily equipment calibration and report any technical faults to the Biomedical Engineering unit immediately.

  • Monitor and manage the use of contrast media, ensuring all safety protocols for adverse reactions are in place.



Administrative & Patient Management:




  • Educate patients on the procedure to ensure maximum cooperation and reduce anxiety.

  • Verify the clinical appropriateness of a request form (vetting) before proceeding with the scan.

  • Manage patient flow within the department to minimize waiting times.



Requirements & Qualifications

Academic Qualifications:




  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Radiography (B.Rad) from a recognized university.

  • Completion of a one-year mandatory Internship program at an accredited hospital.

  • NYSC Discharge Certificate or Exemption Letter.



Professional Certification:





  • Current and valid Annual Practicing License from the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN).





Technical Skills:




  • Proficiency in Digital Radiography (DR) and Computed Radiography (CR).

  • Sound knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and physiology.

  • Strong computer literacy (PACS and HIS software).



Key Competencies




  • Professionalism: Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards in line with the Hippocratic oath.

  • Communication: Ability to explain complex medical procedures in simple terms (and local dialects where applicable).

  • Resilience: Ability to work under pressure, especially in a busy "A&E" (Accident and Emergency) environment.

  • Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with Nurses, Doctors, and Porters to ensure seamless patient care.
