We are seeking a qualified and experienced Deck Officer / Navigation & Seamanship Instructor for a privately owned indigenous Maritime Training Institute committed to providing quality maritime education, professional training, and human capital development for the Maritime and Oil & Gas industries.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver theoretical and practical training in Navigation and Seamanship.
Conduct training in marine navigation, chartwork, passage planning and bridge watchkeeping.
Provide practical instruction in seamanship, anchoring, mooring, berthing and deck operations.
Train candidates in COLREGs, collision avoidance and safe navigation practices.
Conduct ECDIS, RADAR/ARPA and bridge simulator-based training, where applicable.
Prepare lesson plans, course materials, practical exercises and assessments.
Assess trainees’ knowledge, skills and competence in accordance with approved training standards.
Maintain accurate training records and assessment reports.
Ensure training activities comply with STCW requirements, NIMASA regulations and quality management procedures.
Support course reviews, internal audits and continuous improvement activities.
Promote safety, professionalism and discipline among trainees.
Requirements
Minimum of Officer of the Watch (OOW) Deck Certificate of Competency (CoC) or an equivalent recognised maritime qualification.
Valid STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) certificate.
Valid Train the Trainer (TTT) / Training, Teaching and Assessment (TTA) certificate or equivalent recognised instructional qualification.
Valid medical fitness certificate in accordance with applicable STCW requirements.
3–5 years’ relevant sea-going experience as a Deck Officer.
Demonstrable experience in navigation, bridge watchkeeping and seamanship operations.
Previous experience as a maritime instructor or trainer is highly desirable.
Experience with ECDIS, RADAR/ARPA or bridge simulators will be an advantage.
Relevant additional STCW certifications, including ECDIS, RADAR/ARPA, GMDSS and Bridge Resource Management (BRM), will be an advantage.
Candidates holding a Master Mariner (Class 1) Certificate of Competency, with substantial sea-going and maritime instructional experience, may be considered for senior instructional responsibilities.
