The following are major tasks, duties, and responsibilities that typically make up the masonry laborer job description in most organizations:
- Assisting with the preparation of concrete and mortar
- Helping the mason to lay stones, bricks, blocks, and several other materials to form structures
- Ensuring that surfaces are prepared before beginning work
- Ensuring that the laying of blocks or bricks conforms to blueprints, plans, or drawings
- Molding expansion joints and edges with the use of the necessary tools such as edging tools, jointers, straightedge, and so on
- Mixing grout or cement and moving it to the work area
- Cutting bricks that are needed for corners, arches, and complex patterns
- Ensuring that the required tools needed for a job or project are ready and well-kept after the job.
Skills / Knowledge / Ability
- Interested candidates should possess a Bachelor's Degree / OND with 10 - 15 years work experience.
- Well-developed physical strength and stamina to lift heavy objects, make strenuous movements, and also handle tools efficiently
- Good communication and interpersonal skills which enables a masonry laborer to work effectively and liaise with team members and the professional mason
- Profound knowledge of the relevant masonry tools, as a masonry laborer is expected to be familiar with tools such as edging tools and jointers to use them efficiently and effectively
- Highly detail-oriented mind, as the job of a masonry laborer requires him/her to pay particular attention to little details such as working on edges, complex patterns, arches, etc.
- At least a High School diploma or several years of apprenticeship on the job.
