Job Description
Job Purpose
- Responsible for operating or overseeing operations of maintaining machine tools, primarily lathes, to produce precision metal components.
- Work with a variety of metals and materials, interpreting engineering drawings and specifications to create parts that meet tight tolerances and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Setup and Operation:
- Prepare and set up the lathe or other machine tools, including selecting appropriate cutting tools and workholding devices.
- Operate machine tools to perform turning, facing, boring, threading, and other machining operations.
Material Preparation:
- Select and load raw materials, such as metal bars or blocks, into the machine.
- Calculate and input the necessary machining parameters, including speed, feed rate, and depth of cut.
Tool Selection and Maintenance:
- Choose the appropriate cutting tools based on the material and machining requirements.
- Maintain and sharpen cutting tools as needed to ensure optimal performance.
Quality Control:
- Monitor the machining process and performance and inspect finished parts for dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
- Make necessary adjustments to maintain quality and meet specified tolerances.
Safety and Maintenance:
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
Blueprint Interpretation:
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to understand part dimensions and tolerances.
- Program computer numerical control (CNC) machines when required.
Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of machining processes, including setup notes, tool changes, and inspection reports.
Problem Solving:
- Identify and troubleshoot issues related to machine performance, tool wear, or part defects.
- Collaborate with supervisors and engineering teams to resolve complex problems.
Efficiency and Productivity:
- Optimize machining processes to improve efficiency and reduce cycle times.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and cost savings.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Any other responsibility that may be assigned from time to time by Technical Officer/Maintenance Manager
Job Specification
- National Diploma or its equivalent; vocational training or certification in machining is often preferred.
Additional Qualification:
- Proven experience as a Machine Turner or Machinist, with expertise in lathe operation.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
- Knowledge of machining principles, tool selection, and cutting parameters.
- Familiarity with CNC machining and programming (if applicable).

- Ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy materials, and operate machinery safely.
- Strong mathematical and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and precision.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
