Job Overview/Summary:


The IRC is looking for an experienced flood and hydrologist to develop and manage climate data measurement and tracking tools and systems. The primary responsibilities will be monitoring and forecasting extreme climatic conditions including flood and drought using different sourced data including discharge rates, precipitation, streamflow, river siltation and other weather climatic indicators within areas of interest. The hydrologist will collaborate with hydro meteorological agencies and Government partners on data sharing and analysis of the same to inform decision for Anticipatory Action and climate resilience projects.


Major Responsibilities:



  • Support in the development of climate hazard trigger thresholds

  • Development of measurement system and environmental impact of floods, erosion, and drought in the project areas

  • Develop prediction models for floods and droughts, using open-sourced platforms such as Glofas, Fanfar, C2S, Google earth engine among other sources.

  • Run computer aided models to analyze flood data. Develop techniques to improve water quality and quantity for communities during flooding.

  • Present findings to managers and policy makers

  • Foster participatory planning and monitoring of flood in collaboration with relevant stakeholders

  • Support in designing drought adaptation/water efficient farming models for farmers in areas of interest.


Key Working Relationships:



  • Position Reports to:  ERD Senior Manager with technical oversight from the ERD Technical Coordinator

    Position directly works with:  ERD manager.

  • Indirect Reporting:

    Other Internal and/or external contacts:

  • Internal: Operation and ERD team

  • External:  Project donors, research partners, Anticipatory Action Hub


Qualifications


Education:



  • Bachelor's degree in Hydrology, Environmental sciences, Watershed Management, Climate Change/studies, Geography, Geology, or related field required.  MSc. is a plus.


Work Experience:



  • Minimum of 2 progressive years of flood and drought monitoring.

  • Good understanding Food Security and livelihood indicators.

  • Demonstrated ability to write/produce quality reports.

  • Experience in electronic data collection and management

  • Experience in stakeholders’ engagement


Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:



  • Previous experience as a hydrologist or in a similar role

  • Working knowledge of GIS and GPS applications

  • Experience using open-source flood and precipitation monitoring platforms such as GLOFAS, Google flood hub and FANFAR

  •  Hands-on experience running computer-aided models.

  • Familiarity with writing reports and giving presentations.

  • Computational and mathematical ability

  • Critical thinking

  • Ability to work well under pressure.

  • Full professional competency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Strong knowledge of climate change

  • Good knowledge and skills in Infographics and hydrographs


Demonstrated Management/Leadership Competencies:



  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly assess priorities and effectively manage a variety of activities at a time while paying appropriate attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with staff and project stakeholders.


Language Skills:  



  • Fluency in English Language (written and oral) required.

  • Good knowledge of Hausa Language is desirable but not compulsory.
