JOB ROLES FOR LABORATORY SCIENTIST

Medical microbiology
- Examining and identifying bacteria and other microorganisms causing disease.
Clinical Chemistry
- Preparing specimens and analyzing the chemical and hormonal contents of body fluids.
Transfusion science
- Collecting, typing and preparing blood and its components for transfusions.
Hematology
- Studying the structures and functions of the different types of blood cells.
Histopathology
Cytology
- Prepare slides of body cells examining them microscopically for abnormalities that may signal the beginning of a cancerous growth.
Immunology
- Examine elements of the human immune system and its response to foreign bodies.
Virology
- Identify infections and viruses such as hepatitis, AIDS and rubella.
- Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment -properly set up, calibrate, maintain, operate and shut down such instruments.
- Maintain competence in Laboratory Information System that is crucial to the quality operations of the laboratory and patient care.
- Actively initiate and participate in Quality Improvement Programs essential to ensure that laboratory testing is accurate, timely and meets customer needs.
- Train and orientate new Medical Laboratory Technologists in the performance and interpretation of test
