Job Description



Key Duties and Responsibilities



  • Oversee the activities of chemical shift operations.

  • Ensure the day-to-day chemical treatment activities required for the demineralization of ground water, treatment of water.

  • Manage the operations of the Demineralisation (Demin) plant, water treatment plant and Condensate Polishing Plant (CPP) 

  • Provide direction and coordinate the activities of the Demin and CPP Engineers/technicians

  • Monitor the production and sufficient stocking of demineralized water for the units

  • Develop process improvement on chemical treatment of water

  • Ensure sufficient availability & production of Demin water for the power generation units

  • Ensure effective maintenance of the water generation equipment for increased lifecycle.

  • Analyzes tests taken by chemical operations technicians

  • Plan resource requirements –manpower and materials

  • Oversee the purification of the steam for the combustion plant

  • Supervise maintenance measures in the condensate polishing unit and online analysers

  • Ensure high availability and reliability of the condensate polishing unit and online analysers

  • Minimise cost of maintenance and optimise equipment lifecycle cost

  • Supervise regular testing and monitoring of water quality

  • Monitor water analysis tests to ensure safety and quality by collecting representative water samples and testing for contaminants and properties such as colour, odour, chlorine levels, nitrification, etc.

  • Design, develop and validate new or transferred water treatment methods based on recognized international requirements, with proper validation records and documentation

  • Oversee regeneration activities.

  • Ensure adherence to safety, environment and other statutory guidelines

  • Conduct performance reviews of subordinates.

  • Prepare periodic reports for the attention of the Head of chemistry.


Key Requirements


Education and Work Experience



  • A university degree in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry or Chemical Engineering

  • Relevant post-graduate degree or qualification

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience


Skills and Competencies



  • Advanced experience in managing end-to-end water chemistry in a power plant

  • Good laboratory techniques and practices

  • Good analytical skills

  • In-depth understanding of the cycle chemistry of a power plant

  • Ability to draw relevant inferences for operations and maintenance from chemical analysis

  • Knowledge of safe working procedures for chemical handling

  • In-depth knowledge of the power operation process

  • Good communication and management skills

  • Problem-solving skills 

  • knowledge and experience of working with relevant modern laboratory equipment
