Job Overview


The Accountant is responsible for managing the financial activities of the NGO, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial regulations and standards. This role involves maintaining financial records, preparing financial statements, overseeing budgeting processes, and ensuring efficient financial management and reporting. The Accountant will work closely with program and administrative staff to support the financial health and sustainability of the organization.


Key Responsibilities:




  • Financial Management:



    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries.

    • Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.

    • Ensure compliance with financial policies, procedures, and regulations.




  • Budgeting and Forecasting:



    • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of annual budgets and forecasts.

    • Track and report on budget variances, providing insights and recommendations for corrective actions.

    • Support program staff in budget preparation and financial planning.




  • Grant Management:



    • Monitor and manage financial aspects of grants and donor-funded projects.

    • Prepare financial reports for donors, ensuring accuracy and compliance with donor requirements.

    • Ensure timely and accurate grant reporting and documentation.




  • Auditing and Compliance:



    • Coordinate and support internal and external audits, ensuring timely and accurate provision of financial information.

    • Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations, standards, and best practices.

    • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization's assets.




  • Payroll and Taxation:



    • Oversee payroll processing, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

    • Prepare and submit tax filings and other statutory financial reports.

    • Ensure compliance with payroll tax regulations and other employment-related financial obligations.




  • Financial Reporting:



    • Prepare and present regular financial reports to management, the board of directors, and other stakeholders.

    • Provide financial analysis and insights to support decision-making processes.

    • Maintain transparent and effective communication regarding the organization's financial status.




Qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A professional accounting certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is preferred.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in the NGO sector.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and best practices.

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage) and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.

  • Commitment to the NGO’s mission and values.


Preferred Skills



  • Experience in managing grants and donor-funded projects.

  • Knowledge of local accounting and tax regulations.

  • Experience in financial management within a multi-donor environment.

  • Familiarity with financial management software and systems used in the NGO sector.
